After nearly two years of managing the evolving emergency response to COVID-19, community based organizations are now looking at the road ahead. Promoting population health has never been more critical to our social stability, economic prosperity, and achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals. Our team has been reflecting on the UN Research Roadmap for COVID-19 Recovery that lays out some of the conversations and questions we ought to be asking as we move into this next phase of pandemic response.

This is an open letter to community health champions working across the system at all levels. Whether you are working in a local community health center or designing programs at the national level, the pandemic has forced leaders to think creatively to serve Canadians. To address these systemic challenges, we need to think differently about how our systems are organized and designed to tackle inequity and steward social justice. This extends beyond how we communicate and connect with systematically oppressed groups - it must be embedded into how we connect as a sector and design the system of tomorrow. We spoke with 40 community health leaders from nonprofits, patient advocacy groups, and community health centres about what it was like pivoting operations overnight to meet the needs of the pandemic. We share our early findings in this blog and hope to host additional opportunities for leaders to reflect and share strategies as our pandemic response evolves and plans for recovery take shape.

Our public health system was never designed to single-handedly deliver mass communications. Moreover, citizens are more open to discovering new voices than relying on anointed ones. It's time for a network of community services and grassroots health organizations to step in and help carry key messages to the last mile of citizens.

As social media enabled our isolated experiences to converge online, the COVID “infodemic” began. Our team has been wading through a sea of information over social media and asking: What does good public health communication look like in 2020? Are we using social media as effectively as we can?
